Description
  • Equilibrium state is the ideal state of a system where all the components are in a balanced condition. This state is achieved when the input and output of the system are equal.
  • Disequilibrium state is the state of a system where the components are imbalanced. This state is usually temporary and it occurs when the system is disturbed by external or internal factors.
  • Transition state is a temporary state of a system where it moves from one state to another. This state is also known as the 'change state' as it involves the process of change.
  • Steady state is a state of a system where the conditions remain constant over time. Despite the input and output, the system remains unchanged.
Examples
  • A pendulum at rest is an example of an equilibrium state. It remains at rest until an external force is applied.
  • A pendulum that is swinging is an example of a disequilibrium state. The pendulum is out of balance and will eventually return to equilibrium.
  • A pendulum that is being pulled back and is about to be released is in a transition state. It is moving from equilibrium to disequilibrium.
  • A machine operating at a constant speed is an example of a steady state. Despite the energy input, the speed of the machine remains constant.
